Peter Wieghofer's research focuses on macrophages in the eye, particularly the role of retinal microglia besides other tissue-resident and infiltrating macrophages in ocular health and disease. He investigates the molecular mechanisms that regulate macrophage activation and function in the eye, with an emphasis on their contribution to inflammatory and degenerative eye conditions. By combining translational approaches involving human tissue samples together with different models, his work aims to uncover new therapeutic strategies for treating eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration.
