In their 1976 published chapter “Rhizom” Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari challenge traditional hierarchical structures of knowledge, advocating for a rhizomatic-model of thought that embraces multiplicity, diversity, and non-linearity: “A rhizome ceaselessly establishes connections between semiotic chains, organizations of power, and circumstances relative to the arts, sciences, and social struggles.”

Especially in our times of multiple crises and global challenges, the exploration of multidirectional connections and entanglements seems to be more important than ever. Just as a rhizome creates connections that are not limited to a single form, direction or path, and challenges traditional epistemic structures, the interdisciplinary exploration of ‘connection points’ and interconnections encourages us to think across disciplinary boundaries in order to gain new approaches and insights.

In 2025, the Graduate School for Humanities and Social Sciences of the 伟德国际_伟德国际1946$娱乐app游戏 of Augsburg invites postdocs (and advanced predocs) in the humanities and social sciences to explore complex interdisciplinary, methodological, and theoretical interconnections under the theme “Connection.Points: Intertwined and Interconnected”.

The international symposium will concentrate on current multi-perspective, multi-directional, interdisciplinary and transnational topics and theories, and explore how these approaches shape our understanding of complex social, cultural, philosophical and historical phenomena. By analyzing the connecting lines we aim to engage in the search for future solutions to interconnected problems.

We invite participants to enter into a meaningful dialogue with renowned experts in the humanities and social sciences and to develop innovative theses. Participants will have the opportunity to attend keynote lectures and workshops and to present their own current research projects. The interdisciplinary exchange intends to generate new insights and to serve as a starting point for future (international) collaborations. Through workshops, lectures and panel discussions, a space will be created where different perspectives and methodologies can converge and new knowledge can be connected.

We welcome proposals for contributions from outstanding early career researchers (postdocs and advanced predocs) on topics from all areas of the humanities and social sciences that explore entanglements, pursue previously undiscovered lines of connection and interrelationships, or engage with new methodological and theoretical connections.

2. Graduiertenkonferenz 2024 Verona "Crisis, Desaster, Destruction"

Crises, disasters, destructions

In recent decades, the topic of environmental disasters and climate crisis has attracted increasing interest, not only among researchers and scholars, but also and above all among the public, especially the younger generations.
Recent environmental disasters such as (to name but a few) the drought in Catalonia, the fires in Canada and Australia, and the floods in Italy and China, underline the urgency of the subject and the direct involvement of every single citizen in an issue that is becoming more and more pressing every day.
In addition to this, the precarious geopolitical balances further aggravated by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the wars in the Middle East, as well as the Covid-19 pandemic and its socio-economic consequences, have contributed to fuelling a sense of uncertainty and instability in many ways.
Starting from these thematic cues, the second meeting of the European Graduate Collaboration Conference intends to investigate the themes of disaster, crisis and destruction from both a physical and metaphorical point of view, from an interdisciplinary and international perspective. Contributions may cover different disciplines and investigate not only the underlying causes of sudden and disastrous change, but also the consequences, solutions and reactions that such changes may cause from a physical, moral, psychological, cultural and social perspective.Crisis, disaster and destruction, therefore, not only as a negative experience, but also as an opportunity for rebirth and renewal according to the etymological meaning of the term from the Greek κρ?σι? “choice, decision, decisive phase”.
